Fire extinguisher maintenance and servicing is the legal duty of the ‘responsible person’ for the premises where they are located. The Fire and Rescue Authority, as an enforcing authority, can demand the provision of such equipment. It is recommended that routine examinations of extinguishers should be carried out every week by members of the workforce. While it is a requirement of BS 5306 Part 3 that more detailed maintenance procedures be carried out by a 'competent person' on an annual basis.
